Zacapa, Guatemala
April 2026

INFO:

Zacapa is located in eastern Guatemala within the Motagua Valley, one of the warmest and driest regions of the country. This region is characterized by tropical dry forest, open woodland, rocky hillsides, and river valleys that support a diverse range of wildlife adapted to warm climates.

On April, we can expect temperatures, during the day, up to 35°C and, at night, as low as 18°C. It is very recommended to bring proper clothing for strong sunrays, and warm temperatures. Sun protection is crucial, lightweight and breathable clothing is highly recommended, and plenty of water for the outdoor hikes.

These outdoor hikes will be divided into three types:

  • Morning Hike: Which will focus mainly on birdwatching, taking advantage of the high bird activity before the temperatures rise.

  • Evening Hike: This will be a blend of birdwatching but also looking for reptiles, mammals, and any other types of animals that are looking for the last sunrays to warm them enough before night arrives.

  • Night Hike: This will fully focus on reptiles, amphibians, and any creepy crawlers that come out looking for a mate or food.

During our time in Zacapa, we may encounter a variety of species depending on the time of day.

Here is a list of our target species that we are hoping to come across with:

Birds:

  • Turquoise-browded Motmot

  • Brown Jay

  • Roadside Hawk

  • Black and Turkey Vulture

  • Great Kiskadee

Reptiles:

  • Central American Rattlesnake

  • Beaded Lizard

  • Various types of Iguanas

  • Various types of Lizards

  • Boa Constrictor

Many more animals are sure to appear during this expedition. If you would like to know more, or have other questions about this expedition, let us know by sending us an email to:
